Koh Rong is a popular tourist island located about 20 km off the coast near Sihanoukville in Cambodia.
About Koh Rong
Koh Rong is a medium sized island measuring 9 km long and from 3 to 6 km kilometres wide. The north west of the island is dominated by hill rising to 316 metres above sea level. The interior of Koh Rong has no significant infrastructure or development, just narrow trails through a landscape of forests and small plantations. What Koh Rong does have, however, is 43 km of beaches and this is the main draw for tourists visiting the island. The island’s four villages are all located on the coastline, along with its resorts, bars and restaurant. Travel around the island is by boat as there are no roads connecting the many different beaches. Koh Rong has a few small shops, particularly in the main village of Koh Tuich, also known as Koh Touch. Visitors need to make sure that they bring money and other essentials with them, such as medicines, because you would need to travel back to the mainland to get to be able to visit a bank, pharmacy or better stocked shop. Koh Rong has lively nightlife, particularly in Koh Tuich, but the main activities for visitors to the island are relaxing on the beach, swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving.

There are 5 ferry and speedboat Koh Rong companies, and one slow wooden ferry boat operation, providing transfer services between Sihanoukville and Koh Rong. On the fast ferry and speedboat services the cost of a return journey is around $25 USD, making it one of the more costly places to travel to in Cambodia where public transport is generally much better value for money than this short sea crossing. All ferry and speedboat services depart from, and arrive into, Sihanoukville at Ochheuteal Pier, which is located 6.0 km by road from Sihanoukville Railway Station. Ferry and speedboat services arrive into, and depart from, a variety of different beaches on the island. It makes sense to decide where you want to stay before you buy your ferry or speedboat ticket so that you can go straight to your resort with your luggage rather than arrive at one point on the island and then need to take another smaller boat with all your luggage to travel onward to the place you actually want to stay.
