Travel by road compared to travel by train

By road it takes about 2 hours 45 minutes to travel from Kampot to Shinoukville. By train the journey is scheduled to take only 2 hours. Travel by train is faster.

There are, however, some disadvantages to travelling by train. The biggest issue is that there is only 1 train a day from Kampot to Sihanoukville. Whereas there are bus and minivan departures to Sihanoukville departing from Kampot throughout the day.

The other thing to bear in mind is that there are bus and minivan services from Kampot which stop outside the entrance to the ferry pier. Sihanoukville Railway Station is located 6.6 km from ferry pier, so people arriving by train need to complete an additional journey from the train station to the place where they can board a ferry to Koh Rong.

About Koh Rong

Koh Rong is 19 km long by 6 km at it’s widest point. There are two features of Koh Ronag geography that are particularly significant:

  • Koh Rong has 43 km of beaches.
  • The interior of Koh Rong is virtually undeveloped. The west of the island is hilly, rising to over 300 metres above sea level, and nearly all of the interior is heavily forested and accessible only on foot via narrow jungle trails.

There are a number of different ferry piers in Koh Rong and four main beaches hosting the vast majority of visitors to the island. The most developed of these is Koh Touch, which is where the island’s main village is located. Koh Touch, however, has very facilities compared to the mainland beaches of Sihanoukville. Koh Rong has that ‘tropical island feel’ that is becoming very difficult to find in South East Asia as the region’s tourist industry has expended massively in the last two decades.
