About Travel to Kampot
Kampot is medium sized town with around 45,000 permanent residents located on the banks of the slow moving Tuek Chhu River. The surrounding countryside is very pleasant, and the sea is only 5 km from Kampot. Compared to Phnom Penh, Kampot is laid back and pleasant and that’s a major reason why this out of the way town is becoming one of the more popular destinations for foreign visitors to Cambodia. A noticeable number of Europeans have set up businesses in the town and the range of hotels, restaurants and bars has increased as a consequence. Kampot is developing fast, and the character of the town is changing too.

A lot of visitors to Kampot choose not to stay in Kampot itself but at one of the waterside resorts a few kilometres up river from Kampot Town centre. Paddle boarding and kayaking on the Tuek Chhu River are popular activities. There is also a 3 km route along smaller waterways through rural countryside called the Green Cathedral which is very popular. The route starts from the Tuek Chhu River 5.7 km by road from Kampot Railway Station. You can rent kayaks from any one of several resorts located near to the beginning of the Green Cathedral kayaking route.
Other activities in and near Kampot include:
- A visit to a local pepper farm. Pepper from Kampot is generally considered to be amongst the best in the world.
- Explore the 1,000 year old cave shrine at Visit Phnom Chhnork.
- Tour the ruins of the French colonial era Bokor Hill Station.
