About Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s most popular beach resort destination. Sihanoukville itself is a large and busy town, with several town centre beaches, the most popular of which are Independence Beach and Ochheuteal Beach. Sihanoukville Town itself is largely focussed on catering to Chinese tourists and in particular Chinese tourists who come to Sihanoukville to gamble at the town’s many casinos. Sihanoukville Town holds little of interest to most non-Chinese visitors except for being a transport hub and visting the charming hill top temple, Wat Leu.

Rather than stay in Sihanoukville Town many tourists head either to Otres Beach or one of the two islands just of the coast, Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem:

  • Otres Beach: The centre of Otres Beach is 13 km by road from Sihanoukville Railway Station. This 3.7 km long stetch of beach has lots small bungalow resorts, some directly on the beach, and plenty of restaurants and bars serving Cambodian and International cuisine. The small Otres Village is popular with Western tourists.
  • Koh Rong: Koh Rong is a 9 km long island located 20 km off the coast. Koh Rong has 43 km of beaches all of which are generally better than the beaches on the mainland. The island also has plenty of affordable beach front accommodation. By speed boat the journey from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong takes around 30 minutes. See ferry and speed boat times from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong.
  • Koh Rong Samloem: Koh Rong Samloem is located just to the South of Koh Rong. Koh Rong Samloem is smaller and slightly less deceloped than Koh Rong. Koh Rong Samloem is perhaps the better choice of the two island for younger travellers and those who enjoy long walks. See ferry and speed boat times from Sihanoukville and Koh Rong Samloem.
