About Stung Treng
Stung Treng is a small town of around 30,000 permanent residents located at the point where the Tonle Sekong River joins the Mekong River. Stung Treng is 67 km by road to the south of the border with Laos and many of the foreign visitors who come to Stung Treng are on route to Laos either by road, or for a more exciting option by boat on the Mekong River. The Mekong River route from Stung Treng is not possible during the dry season as the river is normally too low to be navigable.

The major tourist attraction in Stung Treng is boat trips on the Mekong River and visits to the surrounding countryside. Cambodia’s tourism authorities are promoting a 180 km long stretch of the river from Kratie Province though Stung Treng up to the Laos border which they have named the ‘Mekong Discovery Trail’. Highlights of the Mekong Discovery Trail include the chance to see the rare Mekong River Dolphin, trek through forests along the river bank and relax on one of the many Mekong River house boats in Stung Treng Province. Mekong River tourism in Stung Treng Province is still in its infancy and now is a good time to go before the infrastructure develops and tourists come in great numbers.
