About Travel to Ho Chi Minh City
With over 9 million residents, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam and also the most prosperous accounting for around 20% of the country’s GDP. Ho Chi Minh City is not quite as popular a tourist destination as Hanoi, the smaller capital city of Vietnam. There are several reasons for that, one of which is that Hanoi is closer to Vietnam’s number one tourist attraction, Ha Long Bay.
Nonetheless, Ho Chi Minh City has it own distinctive culture, some great places to visit, and it’s a transport hub for travel to other major destinations in Southern Vietnam, such as Mui Ne, Can Tho and ferry services to Phu Quoc.
Where to Stay in Ho Chi Minh City
Many foreign visitors choose to stay in Pham Ngu Lao, which is an area on Western edge of Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 where the city’s most famous landmarks are located.
Pham Ngu Lao is an area with lots of budget hotels, as well as bars and restaurants, catering premoninantly to foreign visitors that is often compared to the Khao San Road in Bangkok. It’s an easy and convenient place to stay, although as visitors become more familar with the city they want to stay somewhere a little less busy with fewer tourists.
