About Travel to Koh Kood

Boonsiri High Speed Ferries services from Siem Reap to Koh Kood travel via Hat Lek Pier, which is only 7 km from the Khlong Yai border crossing from Cambodia into Thailand. The ferry journey from Hat Lek Pier on the mainland to Ao Salat Pier in the north of Koh Kood is scheduled to take 2 hours 20 minutes in a comfortable high speed catamaran ferry.

Geography of Koh Kood

Koh Kood is a fairly large island, 22 km long by just 10 km at its widest point. For the size of the island, the population is very small. Estimates of the number of permanent inhabitants ranges from 2,000 to 2,500 people. Most of these permanent residents live on or near beach resort areas. The largest settlement on Koh Kood, Ao Salut where the ferry pier is located, has a population of about 300. Ao Salut is where you find the island’s 3 ATM machines, a bank, a small medical facility and the island’s police station.

Tourism on Koh Kood

Koh Kood has 7 main beaches and these are where almost all tourists travelling to Koh Kood will choose to stay. Koh Kood’s beaches are nearly all on the west coast of the island, and probably the most popular of these beaches is Bang Tao Beach in the south west of the island.

Koh Kood itself offers a small range of activities for visitors including snorkelling, scuba diving, walks to two scenically located waterfalls, and an estuary which is a good place for kayaking through mangrove forests. The main reason visitors come to Koh Kood is to relax on the beach.

Places to Stay in Koh Kood

In terms of accommodation, Koh Kood is best known for hosting one of Thailand’s top luxury hotels, the Soneva Kiri Resort & Residences. Room prices for the Soneva Kiri Resort & Residences, depending on the room type and the season can rise to around $1,500 USD a night. There are also much cheaper places to stay, in the 4,000 to 5,000 THB a night category for a beach side resort with shared swimming pool, and in the 1,000 to 2,000 THB a night range for a more basic bungalow near to the beach.

Other than the Soneva Kiri Resort & Residences, the pricing of the hotels and resorts in Koh Kood is not that different to equivalent accommodation on other Thai islands, particularly given the closeness to the beach of all the tourist accommodation on Koh Kood. The island is more expensive than the mainland, but it is not an exclusively luxury destination which is prohibitively expensive for all other types of travellers.
